Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair embodies the essence of intimacy—a space within a space. Designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, it was created to provide a sense of enclosure and personal retreat within the hotel’s bustling lobby. The chair allowed guests to retreat into their own little cocoon, offering privacy and comfort in an open space.
Now, it is featured at Paris’ Musée des Arts Décoratifs, as part of the exhibition L’intime, exploring the evolution of private spaces. The exhibition highlights how objects shape our personal sanctuaries, and the Egg Chair is a perfect example—its sculptural form and embracing curves redefine comfort and connection with our surroundings.
Experience L’intime in Paris until 30 March 2025. The exhibition has also been made into a book with the same name: L’intime -de la chambre aux réseaux sociaux by Gallimard, Musée des Arts décoratifs.
