In March 2023, Fritz Hansen launched the Ant with front upholstery. The new padded chair represents the biggest upgrade of the shell since the chair was first launched in 1952. The new feature makes the chair even more comfortable and adaptive while preserving the simple and unique silhouette.
Arne Jacobsen designed the Ant in 1952 as a small, lightweight, stackable chair that would fit into a modern home. At the time, the design was groundbreaking, both technically and in its form, and it has remained an international design icon ever since. The strong construction and the supple, elegant design were made possible by a new production method developed in cooperation with Fritz Hansen, in which the chair’s seat and back were shaped as a single shell composed of nine layers of moulded plywood. Since the original launch, the chair has remained in production at Fritz Hansen, which has continually updated its colour palette and material composition, and which now presents the first padded model.
