The Arne Jacobsen Clubhouse at Gentofte Stadium

The Arne Jacobsen Clubhouse at Gentofte Stadium

The Gentofte Stadium clubhouse, completed in 1942, is an early work by Arne Jacobsen. After winning the architectural competition for Gentofte Stadium, a new sports park in Gentofte in 1936, Jacobsen developed the project in the late 1930s, designing the facilities including the distinctive clubhouse and changing rooms.

Defined by clarity, proportion and a functional, timeless architectural language, the building forms part of a broader body of work created by Arne Jacobsen in Gentofte — an important chapter in the development of Danish modernism. Today, the building is registred as worthy of preservation.

Gentofte Municipality has recently moved forward with a redevelopment proposal for Gentofte Sports Park that involves demolishing the clubhouse to make way for a new swimming facility.

The proposal has sparked public debate, with prominent architects, politicians, art historians and journalists protesting against the plans and pointing to alternative solutions that would allow the historic building to be preserved as part of the area’s future development.

As descendants of Arne Jacobsen, we are encouraged by the many who have joined the public discussion with calls for a respectful preservation of the clubhouse at Gentofte Stadium. It is our hope that a solution can be found that accommodates future needs while safeguarding this early and significant work — and with it, an important part of Denmark’s architectural heritage.
