In 2012, a collaboration with the furniture manufacturer &Tradition was initiated with the resumption of production of the elegant Mayor sofa. Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen’s design from 1942 combines tradition, craftsmanship and innovation, a design legacy that is now carried forward by &Tradition.
Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen met as children, attended architecture school together and were part of the modernist avant-garde in Denmark from the 1920s. During the interwar years, they collaborated on several groundbreaking architecture projects, including Søllerød Town Hall from 1942, for which the Mayor sofa was designed. The Mayor design is testimony to the architects’ ability to combine the Danish furniture tradition dating back to Kaare Klint with a new and modern design expression.
Since the relaunch of the Mayor sofa, &Tradition has also put Arne Jacobsen’s 1929 lamp design into production, renaming it Bellevue Lamp in homage to Arne Jacobsen’s visionary architecture in the Bellevue area north of Copenhagen from the 1930s.
